‘Microbiology’ is a burgeoning field with plenty of opportunities for career building and successful advancement. Though invisible to the eye, ‘Microorganisms’ are no less than being the ‘Nature’s Wonders and Living Miracles’. The existence of our planet and all life on it entirely depends on these tiny Wonderful Microorganisms, Microbiology, is undeniably a very important Science of Life. The knowledge gained from this enables us to unlock significant economic benefits, address pollution control, combat diseases, enhance agricultural production, improve food quality, promote public health, tackle emerging infectious diseases, and develop life-saving therapies and vaccines.

The Microbiology department of Vijaya College, Jayanagar, with a rich legacy of its successful Alumni, has continuously updated with the new developments in the field of Technology, to harness the enormous potential and scope of Microbiology as a ‘new generation science’.

The department conducts a wide range of career-oriented and Skill-enhancing activities: Seminars, Webinars, Symposia, Competitions and Workshops to empower and upskill the students. These activities promote analytical reasoning, planning, decision-making, lab research, better communication and presentation, apart from inculcating collaborative work, team spirit, leadership and entrepreneurship.

The department started ‘JEEVAANU’, a Wall Magazine and Journal in November 2023, to enthuse our students and promote in them the knowledge as well as the spirit of scientific temper and writing. This has also brought an awareness among others/the public on the awesome world of Microbes and the Science of Microbiology.

To foster the skill of scientific writing and enhance the hunger for knowledge, our students were made to author chapters which were eventually published in ‘Peer Reviewed and Referred Books’:

• ‘Microbes as Frontiers Saviours in Enhancing the Soil Fertility’ – in ‘Current research in Soil Science’; ISBN – 978-93-5570-681-2; Publication year – 2023

• ‘Bacteria: An Instigator Microflora to Foster Innovation in Dairy Industry’ – this is accepted for publication in an edited book titled Research Trends in Bacteriology (Volume - 2).

To encourage the spirit of Scientific research, the department involves students in ‘Research activities’:

• Isolation, Screening and Optimized production of Enzymes, using different fungal isolates.

• Recycling of Lignocellulosic wastes for sustainable food production.

Association of Microbiologists of Vijaya College Jayanagar: ‘V- JAM’ is collectively involved in the activities of the department. The association recently brought out a Microbiology Calendar.

Ambassadors of Microbiology: Our Successful Alumni regularly interact with our present students through their active participation in Group discussions, Micro-Talks and Placement drives.
